Theater Lighting is a Specialized Form of Lighting Requiring a Certain Degree of Expertise
Theater lighting entails the use of lighting to illuminate the drama in a play, musical dance or
opera. The use of this lighting entails what you see or you don’t see on stage. This is a highly
specialized form of lighting which is used to create a certain ambience and determines the mood
which you might want to create. The kind of fixtures used the brightness and intensity of the light
and the colors determine what you can see or not see on stage.
There are three basic forms of lighting which must be kept in mind while using this product.
They are: task lighting (that is when you want to do something), accent lighting (which gives the
theater a certain character by illuminating the architectural details, or a highlighting a certain
specific area) and ambient lighting (which is basically a filler; it is a diffused foundation
lighting which fills all the corners of the room). Even the most subtle lighting can significantly
affect the atmosphere and mood. Color of the light is also a very important consideration to be
kept in mind.
Theater lighting is of various kinds and involves a variety of lighting systems. Which ever one
you choose, it should provide a great aesthetic benefit, create the mood you desire and make the
theater a warm, inviting and comfortable space. You must also keep in mind that the light is such
that people can safely move around. The light source should be such that it is not harsh to the
eyes and doesn't cast a glare.
The most common types of lighting devices used are incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, LED and
fiber optic. Each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. Before you go ahead and invest
in theater lighting, it would be advisable to get as much detailed information as you can and
seek the opinion of professionals.
