Unique Lighting from Phillips Lighting
The Art Nouveau era epitomized the use of precious materials to make basic items. Even a
kitchen appliance like the kettle was no longer just a water boiler. Some were created in
stainless steel with an undulating spout and brass lid. Following on from the Art Deco era,
Art Nouveau was a new wave of design which took the philosophy of the traditional European
house and gave it a ‘then’ contemporary spin. Phillips Lighting is hugely inspired by this
era and many of its lines today have an Art Nouveau feel and flavor.
Phillips Lighting, started in 1947, started by specializing in lighting in this style and
diversified to other styles. The materials used are spectacular with old growth woods,
bronze, gold, marble, onyx and opal sheens and finishes all being commonplace. In simple
light fittings, an almost renaissance feel is present with gold wall sconces made with pearl
globes and a stone trim typify the kind of lights that are available.
An emphasis on sophistication and an eye on history makes a lot of the modern designs real
modern classics. Copper chandeliers with multiple uplights shades made with hand-blown
Venetian glass like the Aura Chandelier. Ceiling fans that would not look out of place
in a Fijian spa, like the Islander. These designs are classics which we did not know were
created by Phillips but at first sight are instantly familiar.
The designers at Phillips Lighting seem to be cut of a different fabric to the regular
lighting designers. There is a genuine desire by the designers to create, jaw-dropping,
eye-opening designs for the contemporary home. This kind of attention to detail is rarely
seen and explains the popularity and success of this house for over 55 years.
