The Future of Lighting Design
Lighting comes in all shapes and forms. Its reason for being is to light a specific area.
This is a basic function, so in order for the lighting industry to exist and to make thousands
and thousands of lines of lighting the design element within must be strong. To have as many
consumers out there demanding different styles of lighting shows that the design element is
strong, varied and desired. People‘s appetites are whet and they want more.
Lighting comfortably falls into two categories, traditional and contemporary. This is the
difference between the past and the present. People rarely consider lighting design for the
future and how our houses and places of work are to be lit. Just as every aspect of our home
is evolving so to is the humble light.
How is lighting to look in 2030 or 2100? I really cannot say because if I knew I would get
into line at the patent office, get into production right now and make my fortune.
In Victorian times, when oil lamps were the basic light source of the average household,
how amazingly beautiful must have Tiffany Lamp looked. In the 1940’s when lights were very
traditional in appearance, set in glass, gold and marble could the average consumer even
conceive of the lava lamp? When people placed a cumbersome freestanding lamp in the cabinet
did they know that recessed and under cabinet lighting was only around the corner to balance
and further enhance the appearance of their space.
From what we know about lighting now, we know for certain that anything is possible in future
in terms of lighting design.
